DAY 4 - January 16, 2019

Olha Mirchuk

Q: What is your major and minor (if applicable)?

A: Finance Major / Business Economics and Law Minor.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a business degree?

A: I was always interested in Businesses and I always found myself reading about banking systems in different countries and the way to get into that field.  I fell in love with Economics and decided to still try Business. Turns out it was indeed a place to be. Another reason was my parents who were able to see a business person in me and always guided me to the right choices of classes and life path.

Q: Who is someone who inspires you?

A: My parents inspire me more than anyone in the world. They gave me an opportunity to live a good life by working very hard and I`m in return going to do everything to make their life even better.

Q: What has been your most memorable experience of business so far?

A: My first presentation was the most memorable experience so far. I was working so hard to get to that point and I really felt like everything is possible when you put enough effort into that.

Q: How would you describe yourself in three words?

A: Ambitious, friendly, hardworking.

Q: What will we find you doing when you’re not at school or studying?

A: I travel and attend different conferences. I like to look for different short term opportunities to learn, explore and experience. I found that they makes me stronger as an independent individual and better student. My goal is to become world citizen meaning feeling at home in every country I’m planning on visiting and that is why I enjoy learning languages as well. They make me look at different situations with a multiple cultural perspectives making me wiser with every new language.

Q: What's your dream career?

A: I don’t have a dream career path, but I have a dream way of living. I’m still trying to understand what I want to get out of the all opportunities available for me. So far I’m choosing the most safe course load so that I can still stay flexible in my decisions. I definitely see myself in the office trying not to hate Excel while absolutely enjoying working in the team and getting tasks done.

MARC BLAIS

Q: What is your major and minor (if applicable)?

A: Entrepreneurship Major / Marketing Minor.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a business degree?

A: Definitely a few factors that influenced my decision in pursuing a degree in business. My original plan was to pursue a degree in sciences, but after spending time in the program I felt like it wasn't for me. The appeal of a much more social program plus the prospects of working for myself in the future really facilitated my decision in transferring into business. So far it is looking like one of the best decisions I have made.

Q: Who is someone who inspires you?

A: So I guess I'm kind of cheating on this but for my "person" I have to choose two because there is no way I could pick between them. Rohan Gupta and Mayank Pathak have been incredible role models and mentors going into the faculty of Business and the BSA. I met both of them my first two weeks of Business and were two of the most friendly faces I came across. In the short time I have been working with them they have already impacted my life in such a positive way. They have taught me to embrace being in uncomfortable or new situations. The ability to take accountability and lead with passion. They continue to help me with time management and leading my cohort. I'm so grateful I had the pleasure of meeting them and excited for our relationships to grow thought out the school year.

Q: What has been your most memorable experience of business so far?

A: Might be a bit biased since I helped organize them, but the cohort bar event and wellness event were both extremely memorable. Getting to know all the first years in a more casual environment such as at a bar or bowling was unforgettable and definitely some of my favourite memories so far.

Q: How would you describe yourself in three words?

A: Driven, personable, different.

Q: What will we find you doing when you’re not at school or studying?

A: Definitely depends on the season. In the winter I normally like to stay inside unless its skiing! If I am not in class you can probably either find me at Dewey's or any where that offers happy hour. During the summer months I love to spend my time outside, so generally will be running, playing basketball or hanging out with friends.

Q: What's your dream career?

A: My dream career is to work for myself, so eventually the goal would to be create my own startup and hopefully find success doing that!

Mehak Kaul

Q: What is your major and minor (if applicable)?

A: Finance Major / Linguistics Minor.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a business degree?

A: My entire family is in banking and/or in another financial area of work and seeing them genuinely love their job and coming home everyday actually enjoying the work that they do, it really made me want to also follow in their footsteps.

Q: Who is someone who inspires you?

A: My dad, he has not only been my biggest supporter but has also challenged me to go on and strive for the absolute greatest. He's taught me to always think big because he's experienced first hand about wanting to do something absolutely crazy (like moving to another country and starting a new life there) and having it turn out so good for him. Believe it or not but he was the person that pushed me into the pool for the first time and said "I know you don't know how to swim, but in life you won't know how to do a lot of things and you'll have to figure out a way to do it anyways, so...swim!". Little 6 year old me didn't really understand at the time what that meant because I was too busy trying to not drown but that saying will always empower me to really think outside the box.

Q: What has been your most memorable experience of business so far?

A: This whole year so far has been very memorable for me. It started off by going to Ignite. It introduced me to so many amazing and kind people who I am still friends with right now. From that I became cohort rep and it lead me to really make an image for myself in the business community here at the UofA. I got to know a lot of people from my cohort just by doing weekly presentations and hosting business events. It definitely feels like we're all one big family now and we really wish the best for one another. Finally, the most exciting moment so far this year has been winning the Dean's Competition for BUS 201. Just getting a spot in the competition was exiting enough but actually winning it alongside another group from the SAME cohort felt beyond amazing.

Q: How would you describe yourself in three words?

A: Sociable, creative, loud.

Q: What will we find you doing when you’re not at school or studying?

A: Im either at the UFC gym with my boxing instructor, dancing around, teaching piano to adorable little kids at the studio or just singing obnoxiously loud in my car to songs I don't know the words to.

Q: What's your dream career?

A: After getting my finance degree, my goal is to get my masters/PhD in speech language pathology. My dream career would be to actually open up my own clinic in helping any individuals with language impairments or that need any form of speech language therapy.

To continuously offer opportunities which empower undergraduate students to

understand and adopt the essential skills learned in the study of strategic management

and organization.
